Crackoholic

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The Sends Crackoholic from Shawn Boye on Vimeo.

Two weeks into the forced four weeks rest from climbing my lust for climbing is higher than ever. Unfortunately the joint is healing slowly, if at all. If it’s not better after the break I guess I’ll have to go and see a doctor and get a proper diagnose.

While waiting for things to get better I get inspired for my come back by watching Scott Mooney cruise Crackoholic in Ulorna, Bohuslän, Sweden.

Update: IntelliJ IDEA bug?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

I’m super impressed with JetBrains!

15 minutes after I wrote the blog post about the IntelliJ IDEA bug I found yesterday which automatically got written to my twitter account as well, Anton Makeev an IntelliJ IDEA Developer replies on twitter that he has created a bug report for the problem.

So now it’s possible to track the status of the bug here: http://youtrack.jetbrains.net/issue/IDEA-53257

Me and javac think the two code snippets above are both valid and pretty much same. Funnily IntelliJ IDEA disagrees.

But it’s OK, I still think it’s the best Java IDE available.

Filter messages like this

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Why doesn’t Apple Mail have a “Filter messages like this” function like there is in GMail?

Copying and pasting email addresses manually feels so wrong.

So it’s winter again…

Spring teased us with a warm, beautiful and sunny day yesterday. Unfortunately winter returned today with another storm and 10-15 cm of new snow.

But I’m sure we get the real spring eventually. Like in a month or two.

Turn off that dock unread count

Friday, March 19th, 2010

“At David’s talk in Austin, he talked about increasing productivity. One thing he mentioned that kills flow: that little unread email count notification in your dock (shown at left).”

Turn off that dock unread count – (37signals)

I would love to be able to do that, but unfortunately I get some support questions that require prompt action. One thing is sure though, the constant interruptions kill productivity!

Email notifications of new comments

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

I have now installed and enabled the Comment Notifier plugin for WordPress on this blog.

This means that if you leave a comment on a post and want to be notified of possible follow-up comments by me or some other commenter there is now a checkbox called “Receive notifications via email of new comments on this post” just above the “Submit Comment” button.

If you check this checkbox you will receive an email for each new comment on this post. Hopefully this will make it easier to participate in all the interesting discussions that usually take place in the comments of my posts.

As this functionality was just added it might not work, or not perform as expected. If you notice something odd please let me know. Either by emailing me or by leaving a comment on this post.

Climbing hiatus

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

The situation with the DIP joint on my right middle finger has reached a point where I can’t ignore it any longer. The pain has come and gone for more than six months now but the swelling has never gone down.

A more accurate comparison would be my two middle fingers next to each other but as I needed one hand for the camera you have to make do with comparing the swollen middle finger DIP joint with the other fingers on the same hand.

Since late autumn I’ve only climbed easier routes in the gym and the last months the pain has got better and I actually thought things were heading the right way. But two weeks ago I tried a few harder routes and even though I didn’t feel anything right then things got drastically worse from that point on. Last Monday I could hardly climb, basically the only grip position that didn’t hurt with the right hand was a two finger pinch with the thumb and index finger.

To give my finger a chance to heal for good I’m going to take a month of climbing. With spring just arriving to Uppsala and everyone else getting ready for serious outdoor climbing it’s a hard decision to make. But hopefully by resting now I will be able to climb all through the summer and autumn and not ruin the complete season which climbing outdoors in my current situation most likely would do.

But what would a “sick leave” be without medication?

IMG_0544.jpg

I took a trip to the pharmacy today and got some pills! Of the above I guess the Omega-3 and Glucosamine might actually help my DIP joint if one is to believe all the witchcraft on the climbing forums.

The multi-vitamin pills will probably not make much of a difference but hopefully the new kind of anti-inflammatory gel will help. The current one we have at home is next to useless. I’ll try to be more consistent with the hot-cold treatment as well.

Don’t think that I’ll sit on my butt this coming four weeks. I’ll try to run as much as possible so that I will hopefully get closer to 80 kilos than 90 kilos. And I’ll work on those core exercises. Maybe I’ll finally get that six-pack! Hah.
