How to convert mp4 video to flv on ubuntu

The ffmpeg package doesn’t support mp3 (nor xvid) encoding by default due to licensing. So if you want to convert a video file in mp4 format from for example your mobile phone to flv format to use with flash you need to fix your ffmpeg package.

The easiest way to do that is to follow this excellent guide.

YouTube Drops Hammer on TinyTube

Over at GigaOM we can read that YouTube Drops Hammer on TinyTube:

Wow, we have come a full circle, and the notice from YouTube, a company built entirely on copyright infringement, and other people’s content, seems like pot calling the kettle black. This indeed is strange, because for a minute I thought it was user generated content, not YouTube’s content.

Using Google Talk with Miranda

If you like me, use Miranda as your instant messenger client when forced to use a Windows machine and you want to connect to Google Talk. It’s not as hard as one might think.

  • First download the OpenSSL dlls and place them in the directory where you installed Miranda (usually C:\Program Files\Miranda IM).
  • Then enable the jabber plugin and restart Miranda.
  • After that it’s just to follow the instructions in the Google Talk Help.

I told you it was easy!

Today’s question

is, why do I have to add the line:

mysql_query(“SET NAMES ‘utf8′”);

to the file /wp-includes/wp-db.php right after line 43, as described in the wordpress support forum to get my utf-8 data to display correctly when moving from php4 and mysql 4.1.11 to php5 and mysql 5.0.

I find it really odd that I had to do this ugly hack to get it working but everything else I tried unfortunately failed.

Linux praises GPLv2

Over at kerneltrap we can read Linus Torvalds rather long mail to the linux kernel list about why he prefers the GPLv2 license. Interesting to read…
